Vocational Training Sessions
On Saturday, July 8, the Archdiocese of Washington held the first in a series of vocational training sessions. The training, held at St. Mark Church in Bethesda, MD, drew over 20 deacons, subdeacons, and servers of all skill levels from throughout the area.
The day opened with prayer and an address by His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon. In his address, His Beatitude spoke about nurturing and developing vocations and stressed that our training to serve at the altar is fundamentally continual, communal, and should be focused on Jesus Christ.
The training, which was divided into two tracks, allowed attendees to focus on the roles in which they currently serve within their own parishes. Deacons, led by Protodeacon Peter Ilchuk, reviewed and practiced the greeting of the metropolitan, entrance prayers, and vesting. Deacons were given the opportunity to serve in different capacities, rotating through positions while discussing common practices, appropriate timing, and movent. Subdeacons and servers, led by Subdeacon Alexander Woodill, focused on familiarization with liturgical items and their use, practical preparations for a visit from the metropolitan, and the folding of episcopal vestments. All participants also had the opportunity to fully vest His Beatitude in a low-pressure learning environment.
