Fr. Michael Oleksa -- a gifted, charismatic, story-teller, lover of Alaska and recognized 'tribal elder' -- regaled some 40 attendees with his stories of Alaskan saints, using their lives to make some key points about missionary outreach:
- Mission work is the work of the laity
- If you are going to do mission work, you need to love Christ and His Gospel and the people your bringing the message to. You can't save what you don't love.
- Don't give up! Love the place, love the people, love what your doing and stay there!
With his energetic style and gift of story telling he held everyone's attention for 6 hours -- and we all left with a sense of excitement and God's hand at work.
The retreat was sponsored by the Mission Board of the Archdiocese and was held at St. Mark Orthodox Church on Nov. 16, 2019.
